Vaporwave has always been a journey filled with joy but unexptected twists and turns. They say listening to a vaporwave album is a journey in itself depending on what you’re in the mood for. This project by // P E N T I U M 2 // ダニ, “PACIFICO CORP/国際” is a journey that’ll take you through several subgenres but it’s also very, very, very long.
Everything you ever expected from vaporwave and some is still there and is done in the style that // P E N T I U M 2 // ダニ has become known for. You’ve heard his work on “INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT EXPERIENCE 421” so if you liked that then you’ll expect a lot of satisfaction from listening to this album. Not only that but his production skill is very impressive as he goes through track after track, every style is done to perfection from the filtered out styles to the clear cut styles that go hard. If anything this shows versatility and shows why // P E N T I U M 2 // ダニ is a household vaporwave name.
The best vaporwave musicians are ones that go very far and this one has ambitions to reach for the sky. Every track is separate yet connects with each other on the same wavelength regardless of subgenre; it’s almost like a celebration of vaporwave and everything it means. Thanks to the description the artist gave us, it’s clear that he’s about his work ethic as he took time to perfect and make sure that every track sounded right. It’s not like “Greatest Hits” where it was all one style, no he took the time to perfect multiple styles and for that, it’s impressive.
The only thing you should know is that it’s long, like “Welcome to the Warp Zone” but longer than “Greatest Hits”. This thing requires 3 hours to sit through and fully dissect and it can be troublesome if you’re not used to listening to music for long durations. You’ll feel bored, tired, wanting to switch to something different but at the same time, you’ll want to see this album to completion; whichever you’ll feel will effect the appeal of this album for you and make you feel like you either wasted your time or had the best time of your life.
I have to say, // P E N T I U M 2 // ダニ is one of the best vaporwave producers out there. By honing his craft, he has made something that showcases his skill. Is it dissectable though as he says it is, not really because it’s not that type of album. It’s not like “To Pimp a Butterfly” where people are trying to dissect it’s meaning; there is meaning but it’s clear cut and presented in an easy to analyze matter. Hip-hop has many meanings, vaporwave can have meaning but it’s limited. Therefore vaporwave albums are not talked about as much.
If you have 3 hours to spare then you should at least listen to this once; it could be perfect with some trimming but as it stands, it’s a good product that’s far away from being the best.
(Editor’s Note This album was originally titled “インタラクティブ百科事典” but was replaced with the above because I couldn’t fit his alias in there.)
